Shell delegation visiting locals in north Mayo today

25/01/2006 - 12:43:53 A delegation of high-level officials from the global oil firm Shell is meeting with local people in Co Mayo today to discuss the proposed Corrib gas pipeline.The group, which is being led by former Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok, is seeking the opinion of local residents on the controversial project.Five local men spent more than 90 days in prison last year for refusing to obey a court injunction ordering them not to obstruct work on the pipeline.They claim the structure poses an unacceptable risk to the safety of the community in north Mayo.The Shell to Sea campaign group which the men are involved with is refusing to meet with the delegation visiting the area today, saying it has no credibility.Spokesman Mark Garavan said: ''We don't see them being what they purport to be, which is an independent oversight group that are coming to review this whole case with an open mind.''They're an integral part of the Shell corporation.''
