"The government has relinquished control over the offshore areas of our industry. Norway was tough regarding oil companies from the start. You now have an almost embarrassingly large pension fund. The situation for Irish communities, however, is as in Ogoniland in Nigeria - oil is a curse,”
This morning two campaigners were assaulted by Integrated Risk Management Services (IRMS) security guards while mounting a digger at Glengad, to stop works encroaching on a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). IRMS are the security company contracted to Shell for the Corrib Gas Project.
An IRMS guard, followed one of the campaigners up the arm of the digger and then viciously grabbed him by the throat and used pressure points to cause him severe pain. The IRMS guard continued to squeeze the campaigner throat while other security personnel pulled him down from the digger arm. Another campaigner suffered a knee injury while being dragged from the top of the cab of the digger. Complaints have been made to the Gardaí regarding these assaults, and both have received medical attention.
Serious concerns have been raised about IRMS conduct in relation to numerous protests in recent times, in particular with regard to the assault on Willie Corduff in May .
Speaking about the incident, Maura Harrington stated “The serious concerns of local people to the actions of security guards have not been sufficiently acted on, and these assaults are a direct result. IRMS are mercenaries acting with impunity, terrorising our community. Locals who oppose this project have every reason to fear for their safety with those thugs around.”
Meanwhile, although there has yet to be confirmation from Bord Pleanála, indications are that the Bord will delay the announcement of their decision regarding the onshore section of the Corrib Gas pipeline .
Commenting on this Maura Harrington said, “This application is the conduit for the large scale plunder of €420 billion in natural resources of the west coast, at a time of great economic need. This pipeline will put people in the community in very real danger, for absolutely no benefit to the Irish people – it should not be granted planning. ”.
