'Letter of thanks' sent to Féile Iorrais artists who supported Erris Shell To Sea

Below is the 'Letter of thanks' from Erris Shell to Sea, sent to some of the Féile Iorrais artists who had shown their support during the festival. It is authored by Vincent McGrath, the local musician, composer and member of 'The Rossport Five'.
The artists are:

Well-known Galway poet Rita Ann Higgins, singer Mary McPartlan from Leitrim, now living in Galway, Andy Irvine of Planxty fame and also well -known local Erris musicians Séamus Ó Mongáin and Joe Carey
A version as Gaeilge was sent to the great Irish language poet from Donegal, Cathal Ó Searcaigh.

The Erris Shell to Sea Community wishes to put on record its deep appreciation of your public show of support during your performance at this year’s Féile Iorrais.

We regret that you were not made aware of Shell’s sponsorship of the festival with the result that you found yourself caught up in a controversy not of your making. The fact that Shell downplayed its involvement with such a prestigious event as Feile Iorrais gives the lie to the company’s claim that it has local support for its project here in Erris.

Your refusal to accept Shell’s money and your public declaration of support for our campaign will strengthen our resolve and inspire us to continue the fight for justice and the survival of our community. The courage you showed during Féile Iorrais in speaking out against the injustices being perpetrated on our community is in stark contrast to the silence and moral cowardice emanating from those in positions of leadership in Ireland today. Many times throughout our own history when our people had no voice it was left to the poets and musicians to rail against the injustices being inflicted on a downtrodden people. You are indeed a worthy successor and a loyal guardian of that proud tradition.

Go raibh míle maith agat.

Vincent McGrath
