Report on Rossport Art Weekend

On Friday the 11th July, people started gathering for the art weekend in which murals and new campaign banner and signs were prepared. Straight away work on the house with the mural “The struggle goes on” was started along with the sign on the roof which reads “Strength in Community”.

Saturday wasn’t suitable for outside work so after a fair while designing what the signs should say, work commenced at a shed which we were kindly given the use of for the weekend.

The various signs included one quoting Kevin Moore, the first An Bord Pleanala Inspector who looked into the siting of the Refinery at Bellanaboy. In 2003, he labeled the proposed location as “the wrong site”.

Tamboran: Fracking company plan 'exploratory borehole' in Fermanagh

The company that plans to use the controversial fracking technique to extract natural gas in County Fermanagh intends to drill an exploratory borehole in August.

The borehole, near Belcoo, will be to collect rock samples and will not involve fracking.

Tamboran Resources said drilling will last about 30 days.

If the samples show commercially viable levels of gas, Tamboran will begin a process that could lead to fracking.

The company said the borehole will be about 15cm across and 750m deep.

The Queen’s University Belfast academic who exposed the South Yorkshire police handling of the 1989 Hillsborough football stadium disaster has supported calls for a full review of the policing of the Corrib gas project in north Mayo.

Criminologist Prof Phil Scraton says international concern about Garda handling of opposition to the gas project reflects a belief that it has “moved beyond a series of specific incidents to something of much greater institutional consequence”.

He considers that the policing of the gas project from late 2006 merits a non-statutory review of all available documentation, which could be a prelude to a full statutory inquiry.

Airing Erris 3: Focus on policing

The third episode in the “Airing Erris” series was held yesterday in Ceathrú Thaidhg in Erris, County Mayo.  This episode focussed on policing and included contributions from former UN assistant Secretary-General Denis Halliday, Goldman Environmental prize winner Willie Corduff, former Garda and Human Rights Monitor Bernard McCabe, peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy and investigative journalist Gemma O’Doherty.  Garda Whistleblower John Wilson, also attended, and spoke about his experiences of Garda corruption.
