"The Government have clearly sent the message to Shell, ‘you can do whatever you want’. Fortunately due to protest, the refinery remains unconnected to the gas field. If, as Shell planned, gas had been flowing by now, we would potentially all be dealing with a gas leak and explosion.”
Shell's attempt to sneak its tunneling plant to put its controversial high pressure pipe under Mayo soil was thwarted by locals who mobilised across north Mayo in a matter of hours. After many blocks set-up by local protestors the convoy was literally bogged down as the oversized trailer of on section of the plant could not fit around a corner. It remained bogged down for days raising questions about Shell's ability to safely conduct its operations in this sensitive but unforgiving environment.
