"The Government have clearly sent the message to Shell, ‘you can do whatever you want’. Fortunately due to protest, the refinery remains unconnected to the gas field. If, as Shell planned, gas had been flowing by now, we would potentially all be dealing with a gas leak and explosion.”
Thursday the 19th April work was held up at the Shell Glengad and Aughoose compounds by a truck occupation.
Rossport solidarity campers and locals blocked trucks on the haulage route from the Bellanaboy refinery and then someone climbed up on top of a Walsh’s liquid container truck. They stayed up there for an hour whilst gardaí milled around helpless on the road below, before picking a moment and making a break for it across the fields. No-one was arrested.
Shell are still years away from pumping gas by their own schedule, and every truck delayed pushes this back further.
Meanwhile pixies pulled up stakes marking the route of the yet-to-be-laid onshore pipeline.
