"Ireland only taxes the profits of such enterprises [petroleum exploration and production]. There is no per unit tax or levy as in other countries and Ireland's tax rate is relatively low. The State also does not take an ownership stake in the field or demand royalties. Thus on this basis, Ireland's tax regime is generous in comparison to that of other countries. "
This photo was taken on the 13th of September 2008. The protestor in the picture is Iollain, Maura Harrington's son. He had just been assaulted and forced to the ground by 4 gardaí, for the crime of trying to cross the supposedly public beach. Shell had put up fencing, splitting the beach in half and despite telling the Government departments that they were allowing people through, no-one was allowed to pass all summer.
On the day this photo was taken, his mother was on hunger-strike at the entrance of the compound, it was fairly clear from the reaction of the Gardaí that they singled Iollain out for special treatment.
