The Beating of the Heart - exhibition by Giselle Harvey

The Beating of the Heart
An exhibition by textile artist Giselle Harvey

GMIT, Cluain Mhuire, Galway 27th May - 5th June

At the heart of this work is the story of a community in North West Mayo subjected to violence by the Irish State to facilitate the Shell Corrib Gas project.
It is a story shared by the Ogoni people of Africa's Niger Delta and many more.

Influenced by the rich textile heritage of Erris, the work utilises textile making as a form of Storytelling, a means of fostering community connectivity and as a form of activism.
It hopes to bring attention once more to the grave injustice inflicted on the people of Erris and all those who struggled with them in solidarity.
The exhibition opens on Friday 27th of May from 5 - 7 p.m and continues until the 5th of June. Giselle will be available to anyone wishing to discuss the work with her.

The Thesis " Localisation of Textile Production and Practice, A pathway to Sustainable Living?" considers how the scale of production and consumption of cloth today effects our communities, environment and economy.
It includes a short critique of Irish government policy on sustainability, citing the Corrib Gas project as a poor development choice.
