Two charged with public order offences over Corrib protest

By:
Lorna Siggins - Irish Times

TWO PROTESTERS at the Corrib gas project in north Mayo were arrested and charged with public order offences yesterday at Belmullet Garda station.

The two from the Rossport Solidarity Camp began their action just after 6am yesterday, when their arms were locked to two concrete barrels on the north coast road near the Aughoose work site for the last section of the Corrib gas pipeline.

Bad politics behind great oil and gas giveaway

By:
Fintan O'Toole - Irish Times

OUR CHILDREN and grandchildren will see us as a weak and inept generation.

They will wonder how we blew the boom, why we put €30 billion into Anglo Irish Bank and Irish Nationwide, how we gave up our economic sovereignty without much of a fight. They will feel bitterness at the way we pushed them, as children, to the top of the queue for so-called austerity.

And unless we act now, that bitterness will turn to contempt. They will hate us for the way, as well as leaving them with a legacy of unpayable debt, we also gave away something that might have been of real use to them, the chance to use our natural gas and oil resources for their benefit.

I’m returning to this issue because it seems to me to be a touchstone for our entire political culture. We can use it to address three big questions: have we learned anything? Is there really a shift in the way we do politics? And have we any capacity for the kind of radical thinking we need?

Sharing energy with Norway

By:
Colm Rapple - Letter to the Irish Times

Sir, – Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte’s response to Fintan O’Toole’s article (August 16th) on our offshore licensing terms and his intention to issue new licences under the current licensing terms is disingenuous in the extreme (Opinion, August 18th).

Press Release - For Immediate release

Road blockade at Shell's Compound in Co. Mayo

This morning at 6.15am two residents from the Rossport Solidarity Camp blocked the road used by Shell to access their controversial compound at Aughoose, Co. Mayo. This action is being taken to highlight Shell's recent incompetency in the North Sea and how these serious incidents and surprisingly common incidents could easily happen in Mayo, with a devastating affect on people's health and the local ecosystem.

Legal system provides no guarantee of justice

By:
Michael Casey - Irish Times

OPINION: LAWS PASSED by the Oireachtas are often poorly drafted, lack coherence and are sometimes at odds with the Constitution.

Our laws on abortion, white-collar crime, human rights, and consumer rights are inadequate in several respects; while bylaws on parking arrangements in towns and cities are a complete mess. The legal underpinning of the Joint Labour Council pay arrangements has recently been deemed unconstitutional. If more people could afford to challenge our laws in the courts, many of them would be found to be unconstitutional.

Sharing energy with Norway

Letters to the Irish Times

Sir, – In response to Pat Rabbitte’s article “Oil firms will shun us if we have Norwegian-style taxes” (Opinion, August 18th): surely this is the reason why the Norwegians have their own company, Statoil? And this low-tax philosophy from a supposedly “Labour” politician? – Yours, etc,

LUKE CAHILL,

Stillorgan Road, Dublin 18.

Sharing energy with Norway

By:
Letters to the Irish Times

Sir, – Fintan O’Toole has written a very interesting article (Opinion, August 16th) on how Ireland can utilise its oil and gas resources.

As a Norwegian guest in your country, I shall not express any opinion on whether Ireland should “offer joint ownership” of its oil and gas resources to my country – that would be a question entirely for Ireland to decide.
