Hundreds heading to Erris for festival to mark 10 years of struggle against Shell

Up to 80 musicians from around Ireland will perform at a one-off festival next to Shell’s inland refinery site in north Mayo this bank holiday weekend in a show of solidarity with the local community. The ‘Party Against The Pipe’ is a three-day festival of music, circus performance, art, children’s activities and free camping, celebrating a decade of local resistance to Shell.

Environmental Protection Agency's immunity from prosecution 'should be withdrawn'

IMMUNITY FROM prosecution should be withdrawn from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and allegations of “maladministration” opened to investigation by the ombudsman, a Government report has found.

The review of the agency, commissioned 15 months ago by then minister for the environment John Gormley, has produced 58 recommendations to improve its structure and operation.

State trawls for increase in offshore licences

The Irish Offshore Operators Association (IOOA) anticipates increased interest in the latest round of applications for gas and oil exploration off the Irish coast, which closes on Tuesday.

Gas and oil exploration companies will apply for new authorisations in the Atlantic Margin off the west coast, from Donegal to Kerry.

A garda, who was convicted of assault yesterday, walked free today after a Circuit Court Judge in Cork revised his 18-month prison sentence.

Yesterday, Garda Dean Foley, who is from Blarney, was given an 18-month sentence with 12 months suspended, after he pleaded guilty to the serious assault of a man in Cork city while he was off duty.

In a Departmental letter issued on Feb 25th  2011, as Minister for DCENR Pat Carey was losing his seat during the polling in the General election; it was indicated that the Minister was granting consent to the new Section 40 (Gas Act 1976 as amended) and Plan of Development (Petroleum and Other Minerals Development Act 1960) consents applied for by Shell E & P Ireland limited for the Corrib Pipeline development.
