Shatter moves to reassure victims of sexual assault

By:
Eoin Burke-Kennedy - Irish Times

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has sought to reassure victims of sexual abuse that their cases would be fully investigated by An Garda Síochána following allegations of misconduct by senior officers.

This follows allegations that a Garda sergeant and two colleagues joked about threatening to deport and rape one of two women who had been arrested at a protest at the Corrib gas project.

The gardaí were inadvertently recorded on a video camera that was confiscated from the activists and which had been left recording in the back of a patrol car.

Corrib Gardaí caught on  confiscated camcorder

Investigation under way after ‘rape’ comments found on protestor’s tape

GARDAÍ in north Mayo who joked among themselves about raping two women they had just arrested during a Corrib gas protest on Thursday last are today (Tuesday) the subject of a Garda Ombudsman Commission  complaint. A senior garda has also been appointed to investigate the matter.
The gardaí, one of whom was a sergeant, were en route to Belmullet Garda Station, while the two women whom they had arrested for public order offences were traveling in two other separate garda cars. The gardaí were not aware that a camcorder they had confiscated was still recording.
“Give me your name and address or I’ll rape you,” the sergeant said.
To much laughter another garda repeated: “Hold it there. Give me your name and address there… I’ll rape you.”
After more laughter, the sergeant repeated: “I’ll definitely rape you.”

Disgust at Corrib tapes

By:
Letter to the Irish Times

Madam, – It was with utter horror and disgust I read the transcript of the video in which members of An Garda Síochána are alleged to have joked about raping two female citizens (Home News, April 5th).

There is nothing funny or amusing about their words or actions. It shows a disregard and disrespect for Mná na hÉireann that cannot and should not be tolerated.
