Drilling should be left to oil industry - Rabbitte

THERE WAS a “developing myth” that Ireland had vast discoveries of oil and gas off its shores, Minister for Energy Pat Rabbitte told the Dáil.

He said a study sponsored by his department had estimated there could be in the order of the equivalent of 10 billion barrels of oil offshore. But that estimate was “yet to find potential” and was based on geological criteria and regional comparisons.

Top European award for ‘An Píopa’

Two prestigious documentaries for TG4 have beaten off strong competition to take a major prize and win a commendation at Circom, the network of regional European broadcasters meeting in Frederikstad, Norway.

An Píopa (The Pipe), commissioned by TG4 with funding from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and from Irish Film Board, won the Best Documentary category and Gualainn le Gualainn, the television history of Irish rugby, won a commendation in the Sports category.

Corrib contractor accused of ‘arrogance’ and ‘bullying’

A GLOBAL construction giant who were responsible for the construction management of the Corrib Gas Project terminal at Bellanaboy was accused of ‘extreme arrogance’ and employing ‘bully-boy’ tactics when dealing with an Erris-based catering contractor.
The comments were made by High Court President Justice Nicholas Kearns in relation to a judgement in a security for costs hearing in the High Court last week involving the Corrib Gas project management company PM Group and Teach Iorrais Teo.

Shell Emissions Up by 9% Last Year, Natural Gas Flaring Up 32%

Royal Dutch Shell has released a sustainability report for 2010 showing that its direct greenhouse gas emissions rose by nine percent, and natural gas flaring—a wasteful practice that contributes its own emissions—increased by 32 percent. Shell attributes the increase to expanded production, including in Nigeria, where it says security has improved.

Shell to Sea campaigner spoke at Dalai Lama conference

A prominent Shell to Sea campaigner was one of the speakers at an event in the Citywest Hotel, Dublin, last Wednesday which was attended by the Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.

John Monaghan, a member of the Rossport community group Pobal Chill Chomáin, was invited to speak at the sold-out Possibilities 2011 civic summit which was organised by Afri, Children in Crossfire, and the SpunOut.ie youth organisation.

The aim of the conference was to inspire people, young and old, to become vocal and active in transforming Ireland and the planet for the better.

Sinn Féin motion would revoke Corrib and Lough Allen licences

SINN FÉIN HAS tabled a Dáil motion which, if passed, would see the State revoke Shell’s licence for the Corrib Gas Pipeline and take a 51 per cent ownership of all gas and oil finds in its territory.

The motion, which will be discussed during Sinn Féin’s designated private members’ time in the Dáil on Tuesday and Wednesday, would also see the exploration licence for oil and gas in Lough Allen to be revoked.
